Ta Xua Travel Guide: Getting There, What to See and When to Go

Ta Xua is a high commune in Son La province, about 240 km northwest of Hanoi, and most people go for one thing: a sea of cloud below bare green ridges at first light. Plan at least one night, because the drive takes five to six hours and the cloud is at its best soon after sunrise. The most reliable months run from about October to April.

What this guide will not promise is the cloud itself. It is weather, and some mornings the valleys are clear or you stand inside the mist. The ridges, the old tea trees and the H’Mong hamlets are worth seeing either way, as long as you are happy with a long road and simple lodging.

Where Ta Xua is, and how it fits together

Ta Xua sits on the Son La side of the Hoang Lien Son range. Since July 2025 the commune has included the old communes of Hang Dong and Lang Cheu, so Dinosaur Spine and the viewpoints around it are now all, on paper, in Ta Xua Commune. Older guides still say Bac Yen district, and Bac Yen is still the name of the town at the foot of the climb.

Two things confuse first-time visitors. The first is that the road viewpoints and Ta Xua peak are different trips: the viewpoints are on the Son La side and reached by road, while the 2,865 m summit is a multi-day trek usually started from Tram Tau on the former Yen Bai side. The second is that distances on the mountain are longer than they look. Dinosaur Spine is about 13 to 15 km from the commune centre, and Dolphin Beak about 10 km in another direction, on narrow roads.

How to get to Ta Xua from Hanoi

The road runs through Son Tay, over the Trung Ha bridge, along route 32 and route 37 to Phu Yen and Bac Yen, then about 15 km up a narrow concrete road with tight bends. There is no train or airport nearby.

Way to goWhat it is likeGood for
Shared limousine vanUsually leaves Hanoi around 22:00 and arrives about five hours later, in the middle of the nightTight budgets and people who can sleep in a moving van
Group tourA fixed bus or van, a fixed plan and a community homestayTravellers who like a group and do not need to change anything
MotorbikeA full day of mountain riding, then steep local tracksConfident riders only. Avoid the climb after dark
Private carFive to six hours with stops, leaving when you choose and arriving in daylightCouples, families and anyone who would rather not drive it

The last stretch from Bac Yen up to Ta Xua is a narrow concrete mountain road with many tight bends. As of November 2026 the province plans to upgrade it, so surfaces may change.

When to go

Cloud is most reliable from about October to April, thickest in the cold months from December to March, and thin in the rainy months from May to September. No month guarantees it. Cold, humid mornings after a clear night tend to give the thickest cloud. Long rain or strong wind breaks it up, so check the forecast two or three days ahead if your dates can move.

MonthsWhat to expect
October to NovemberCool and often clear, with cloud possible but less dependable than from December to March. A comfortable time to walk
December to MarchThick cloud is most likely. Cold at dawn, with frost possible on the coldest days
AprilMilder, with cloud still possible but less dependable
May to SeptemberRainy season: green ridges, thin cloud, slippery tracks and the highest landslide risk

What to see in Ta Xua

Dinosaur Spine

A narrow green ridge that humps along like an animal’s back, with a worn dirt path on its crest. From the small parking area it is about a kilometre along the top, on uneven ground, with steep slopes on both sides. Go early; the cloud usually starts to thin by about 07:30.

Dolphin Beak and the Lonely Tree

Dolphin Beak is a curved slab of dark rock sticking out over open air, best from about 15:30 to 16:30 and often busy. The Lonely Tree stands nearby on a knoll above a green river, at the end of a steep dirt track that is best skipped after rain.

Wind Peak and Ta Xua grassland

Wind Peak is a ridge on the Xim Vang road, close to the commune centre, with small cafes and a good sunset. The grassland is a wide, gentle hilltop on the way to Ban Be, and the easiest stop for children.

Old Shan Tuyet tea

Around Ban Be, tall old tea trees grow on the slopes rather than in clipped rows, and H’Mong families climb them to pick. It is the quietest part of a visit, and the part that has nothing to do with the weather.

Where to sleep

Ta Xua has about twenty homestays and small guesthouses, plus a few lodges with bungalows, and no large hotel. Prices run from about 200,000 to 1,000,000 VND a night at the simple end, more for the best rooms (as of November 2026). Rooms fill up at weekends and holidays in the cloud season, so book ahead, and ask whether your room has its own bathroom. The nearest four-star hotels are about 100 km away in Moc Chau, too far to reach the ridge at dawn.

How many days do you need?

Two days and one night is the minimum that makes sense from Hanoi: one afternoon on the viewpoints and one dawn on the ridge. Three days and two nights gives you a second dawn, which matters because one misty morning can otherwise be the whole trip, and leaves time for the tea forest without hurrying. A single day from Hanoi is not realistic: it would mean ten hours or more in the car and no sunrise.

Honest noteTa Xua is a long way to go for a view that may not appear. The road is slow and winding, nights are cold from November to February, and lodging is simple even at its best. If you only have time for one trip out of Hanoi and bad weather would ruin it for you, somewhere closer is the safer choice.

Ta Xua questions

Is Ta Xua worth visiting?

Yes, if you want big mountain views and can spend at least two days. The ridges and tea forest hold up even on a morning without cloud, but it is not worth the road for one photograph.

Is Ta Xua in Son La or Yen Bai?

The commune and its road viewpoints are in Son La province. The Ta Xua peak trek is usually started from Tram Tau on the other side of the range, which was in Yen Bai and is now in Lao Cai province after the 2025 mergers.

Can you do Ta Xua as a day trip from Hanoi?

Not sensibly. The drive is five to six hours each way, and the best cloud comes soon after sunrise, so you need to sleep there.

Do you need a guide in Ta Xua?

Not for the viewpoints, which are reached by road. A guide helps with reading the forecast, choosing the track for your group and talking with H’Mong families, who mostly do not speak English.
