Ta Xua 3 Days from Hanoi: Private Tour with Two Dawns on the Ridge

The sea of clouds does not appear on request, so this trip gives you two mornings at it, from a private room two nights running, with your own car and guide from Hanoi. Every entry fee is in the price, and your guide pays it at the gate.

The three days, stop by stop

This is a sample trip: add, skip or linger over any stop and we will adjust it. Times are a guide. Cloud and light decide both mornings, and sunset moves with the season.

Day 1 · Hanoi to Ta Xua

Hotel pickup · 07:00 · anywhere in central Hanoi

Drive northwest · Son Tay, the Trung Ha bridge, then route 32 into Phu Tho

Thanh Son tea hills

About 10:30 · about 30 minutes · short walk

No entry fee anywhere on this stop

Rounded hills covered in rows of tea at Thanh Son in Phu Tho province

1 photo · tap to enlarge

A leg stretch on the way up route 32, where low round hills are planted with tea in neat rows. The mountains have not started yet, and your guide uses the stop to go through the plan and the forecast for the morning.

Lunch in Bac Yen

About 12:30 · about an hour · restaurant

Lunch included

Vietnamese lunch dishes on a table in a mountain town restaurant

1 photo · tap to enlarge

A sit-down lunch in the last town before the climb, usually rice, local chicken or pork and mountain greens. Vegetarian dishes on request. From here it is about 15 km up a narrow road to Ta Xua, driven by your own driver, in daylight.

Wind Peak at sunset

Before sunset · until dark · short walk

No entry fee on the ridge road

The ridge road at Wind Peak in Ta Xua at sunset with a small cafe on the edge

1 photo · tap to enlarge

A ridge beside the Xim Vang road about 3 km from the commune centre, as windy as the name says. Small cafes sit along the edge, and drinks there are yours to choose. Sunset comes anywhere from about 17:20 in winter to 18:45 in summer.

Night at a Ta Xua lodge

Evening · private room with its own bathroom

Room and dinner included

A wooden lodge bungalow with a balcony on a Ta Xua hillside at dusk

1 photo · tap to enlarge

The lodges here are simple by city standards and Ta Xua has no four-star hotel; we book the best private room we can get, and name the lodge in writing. You sleep in the same room both nights, so there is no packing on day two. Dinner is at the lodge, often a hotpot with local greens. Nights are cold from November to February, so tell us if you want an extra blanket and we ask ahead.

Day 2 · Ridges, tea and H’Mong families

Dinosaur Spine at dawn

About 06:00 · about 90 minutes · dirt path on foot

Motorbike taxi included

A footpath winding over the grassy humps of Dinosaur Spine with cloud in the valleys on both sides
The worn dirt path along the crest of Dinosaur Spine, with long grass on both sides
Cloud pouring over a lower ridge seen from Dinosaur Spine soon after sunrise
A guide pointing out the valley to two travellers on the ridge at Dinosaur Spine

4 photos · tap to enlarge

You leave the lodge around 05:15 in midwinter and up to half an hour earlier in October and April, set the evening before by the forecast, and drive about 13 km through Hang Dong. From the small parking area it is about a kilometre along the crest on a worn, uneven dirt path, with steep grass slopes dropping away on each side and posts and a rope in places. A local motorbike taxi can take you part of the way. The cloud is usually thickest from first light to about 07:30.

The old Shan Tuyet tea forest

About 09:30 · about an hour · on foot

No entry fee and no obligation to buy

Tall old Shan Tuyet tea trees with pale trunks in the sloping forest at Ban Be
Close view of lichen on the pale trunk of an old tea tree
New Shan Tuyet tea shoots with pale silver down on a branch
A H’Mong woman picking tea from a tall old tree, seen from behind

4 photos · tap to enlarge

After breakfast at the lodge you drive to Ban Be, where tall old tea trees grow on the slopes and H’Mong families climb them to pick. Your guide arranges a visit with a local family and helps with the conversation, and you taste what they make. If leaves are being picked and fired that day, you can try it. On this tour there is no hurry to leave.

A H’Mong hamlet and lunch

About 11:30 · about 90 minutes · on foot, gentle

Lunch included, no obligation to buy

Wooden H’Mong houses on a steep hillside hamlet in Ta Xua

1 photo · tap to enlarge

A walk through a hamlet with your guide translating, then lunch at a local restaurant or family table, usually rice, local chicken or pork and mountain greens. Vegetarian dishes on request. Photos of people only after asking.

Ta Xua grassland

About 14:30 · about 30 minutes · on foot, gentle

Check-in fee included

Open green grassland on a broad hilltop at Ta Xua with ridges behind

1 photo · tap to enlarge

A wide grassy hilltop on the road to Ban Be, about 500 metres down a dirt lane. It is the gentlest walking of the trip and a good place for children and for anyone who wants space without an edge nearby.

Dolphin Beak

About 15:30 · about 40 minutes · on foot

Check-in fee included

The rock outcrop of Dolphin Beak jutting out over a deep valley in late afternoon light
The curved snout of dark rock at Dolphin Beak seen close up from the side
The deep river valley below Dolphin Beak with terraced slopes in low sun
The short dirt path through grass leading out to Dolphin Beak

4 photos · tap to enlarge

A curved beak of dark rock sticking out over open air, with the best light from about 15:30 to 16:30. It is one of the busiest viewpoints, so your guide helps you through the queue. Nobody has to step onto the rock itself; the view from behind it is just as wide.

The Lonely Tree

About 16:20 · about 20 minutes · dirt track

Check-in fee included

A single broad tree on a knoll of red earth above a winding river near Ta Xua

1 photo · tap to enlarge

A single broad-crowned tree on a knoll of red earth above a winding green river, close to Dolphin Beak. The last stretch is a steep dirt track that turns slick in rain, so your guide skips it after a wet day rather than risk it.

H’Mong herbal bath

Evening · about 45 minutes, with breaks out of the water

Included

A wooden tub of dark herbal bath water with leaves in a Ta Xua wooden house

1 photo · tap to enlarge

A wooden tub of hot water brewed from mountain leaves, very welcome after a cold start. Skip it if you are pregnant, have a heart or blood pressure condition, sensitive skin or open cuts, or have been drinking. It is not for children under 5.

Day 3 · A second dawn, then home

Your second dawn

First light · about 90 minutes

Fees included

A sea of cloud below green mountain ridges in Ta Xua soon after sunrise

1 photo · tap to enlarge

Your guide reads the forecast the evening before and chooses: Dinosaur Spine again, Lu Tre valley close to the commune centre, or Wind Peak. Then breakfast at the lodge, and you leave around 10:00.

Lunch and the drive home · Lunch on the way down around midday, then the rest of the road to Hanoi

Back at your Hanoi hotel · Around 17:00

Three days, two dawns, one group

No stops we did not tell you about, nothing to pay at any gate, and any part of it can be changed.

Is this the right tour for you?

A good fit if

The sea of clouds is the point of your trip and you want two tries at it.

You would like a slower day with the tea families, not only viewpoints.

You are travelling with parents or children and want time to rest between stops.

You want one number that covers the car, two nights, the meals and every fee.

Look elsewhere if

You are one person on a tight budget.

Winding roads make you unwell: this is ten to twelve hours in the car over the first and last days.

You need a four-star hotel. Ta Xua has none, and the nearest are about 100 km away in Moc Chau.

Very early starts two days running do not appeal.

If you only have two days, see the two-day tour: same car and guide, one dawn. Or tell us what you want to see, and we will plan a trip around it.

Questions before you book

About the trip

How long is the tour and when does it start?

It runs 3 days, 2 nights, leaving at 07:00 from your Hanoi hotel and returning around 17:00 on the third day.

Where do you pick us up?

At your own hotel, anywhere in central Hanoi. For a Noi Bai pickup, ask us before you book. Your guide waits in the lobby for 20 minutes.

How hard is the walk on Dinosaur Spine?

About a kilometre each way on a worn, uneven dirt path along the crest, with steep slopes on both sides and posts and a rope in places. It is slippery after rain and takes under 30 minutes at an easy pace. A motorbike taxi covers part of it, and anyone can stop at the first viewpoint.

Do two dawns guarantee the sea of clouds?

No, they only improve your odds. Cloud is most reliable from about October to April, thickest in the cold months from December to March, and thin in the rainy months from May to September. No month guarantees it.

Can we change the route or the pace?

Yes. This is a sample trip and every part of it can be adjusted: add a stop, skip one, or spend longer with the tea families. Tell us before you book and we confirm the plan and an all-inclusive price in writing.

Does the guide speak good English?

Yes. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks fluent English and explains H’Mong customs and the mountains as you go.

Booking and practicalities

Is the price per person or for the whole group?

For the whole group, from one to four guests, and the car is the same car. Three or four guests take two rooms. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest. Groups of five or more travel in a larger vehicle, message us for a quote.

How do I pay, and when?

Two ways: pay the full price online by card or PayPal, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the first day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time, guide’s name and lodge name arrive in writing.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Free cancellation up to 21 days before departure for a full refund, with free date changes up to then, subject to availability. From 21 to 14 days before, 50% of the hotel cost is charged because the rooms are held for you. Within 14 days, including no-shows, 30% of the tour price is kept as the deposit.

What should I bring, and do I need cash?

Warm layers and a windproof jacket, because dawn on an open ridge feels cold for much of the year, and frost is possible on the coldest winter mornings. Bring shoes with real grip and a head torch if you have one. You do not need cash at any gate; if you chose to pay the balance in cash, bring it for your guide.

What happens if there is no cloud or it rains?

Cloud is never guaranteed and a clear or misty dawn is not refunded. Light rain does not stop the tour. In heavy rain or under a landslide warning your guide swaps stops at the same price, or you can move the date free, with no partial refund. If the authorities close the road or a natural disaster makes the tour impossible, you choose a full refund or a new date.
